Hyper Universe
Ready to take your action-packed combat to the next level? Become a master hyper player and terrorize your enemies with giant snowmen or creatures from the deep as you fight for victory in Nexon's Hyper Universe.
Important news: The demo version is canceled, because the whole first chapter will be released right away (spoiler: 5 levels in one chapter), the exact date is not known, but I slowly finish the first act of the second level.
The tips and tricks in this guide will provide a glimpse into Hyper Universe's basic mechanics and guide you -- and your team -- to success on the battlefield in this brand-new MOBA.
Getting Started in Hyper Universe
Hyper Universe is a side-scrolling multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). The objective: destroy the enemy base.
Choose from one of over 40 characters, or 'hypers,' to strategically battle your opponents across several lanes. Each hyper is unique and wields an arsenal of five abilities, including an ultimate, which is unlocked at level six. These abilities are much stronger than standard attacks and make defeating enemy players, monsters, and minions much easier. Both abilities and movement controls are keybound and can be adjusted via Hyper Universe's game settings. (There's no mouse control.)
Tip: Each hyper has a difficulty rating depending on its abilities and playing style. Consider mastering a hyper with a low difficulty rating, such as Admiral W, before advancing to a more difficult class. When you're ready to test a new rotation, select Training Mode from the Game Lobby and use that as a guide for choosing new, more robust characters.
Choosing Your Role in Hyper Universe
To accommodate a variety of playing styles, Hyper Universe offers a diverse set of new and traditional MOBA roles: tank, bruiser, specialist, striker, support, or assassin. Here is a list of characters in those roles:
Tank:
- Admiral W, Athena, Gelimer, Green Pit Bull, Gulunba, and Valter
Bruiser:
- Arslan, Hongdukei, Jennifer, Migenhardt, Sonya, Sun Wukong, Tooth and Tops, and Zet
Specialist:
- Aisha, Allen, Ignitia, Perseus, Shasha, Tatyana, and Yuna
Striker:
- Celine, Han, Jack, Michelle, Ryta, Signal, and Turner
Support:
- Cain, Camilla, Curse Eye, Elendis, Pinky, and Victoria
Assassin:
- Blue Rose, Kurenai, Liu, Louis, Sapitelbub, Tae'guk, and Trakakhan
Winning a match in Hyper Universe is ultimately dependent on the players' role choices. Having too many, or too few, defensive hypers in a group can offset the tide of battle. While the enemy team's hyper choices remain hidden during the selection process, you can see what other hypers have been chosen for your team. You can also use Hyper Universe's chat function to coordinate your roles before entering the arena. Being a team player is the surest way to winning the match.
Choosing Your Equipment in Hyper Universe
Equipment improves a hyper's playability and can be acquired through story content completion or purchased using Game Points through the in-game market: Hyper Shop.
Players can augment their competitive edge by configuring each hyper's equipment set in the Game Lobby. While hypers can have several equipment sets in their rotation, only one configuration can be chosen per match.
When dueling in Delta Station or Dragon Refuge, take advantage of your team's success by defeating monsters for gold, which can be used to upgrade your equipment and give your hyper additional buffs. Beware: certain enemies, such as the dragon (Dragon Refuge), require a fully leveled team to defeat.
Hyper Universe Game Modes
Whether you're a novice or seasoned MOBA player, Hyper Universe offers several game modes for you to test your abilities:
- Regular Match
- AI Match
- Custom Match
- Training
- Ranked Match (account level 5 and 12 hypers unlocked required)
You can also spectate other matches.
Hyper Universe Maps
Delta Station (4v4)
- Two lanes of Outer and Inner Defense Turrets (destroying one lane will make the Final Defense Turret vulnerable)
- Features Holo Tiles and Holo Walls
- Monsters that drop gold, EXP, and consumable items
- Destroying the Inner Defense Turret will summon Sentinels
Dragon Refuge (4v4)
- One lane of Outer and Inner Defense Turrets
- Monsters that drop gold, EXP, and consumable items
- The dragon boss spawns at four minutes and drops dragon's chest, dragon's heart, and siege tank -- the strongest siege unit.
- Destroying the Inner Defense Turret will summon Sentinels
Navigating in Hyper Universe
There are several unique navigation tools players can use to quickly travel between lanes or across the map:
- Ladders: Use your movement keys (up and down) to travel between lanes
- Springs: Use your jump key to land on the spring and bounce to higher levels
- Warp portal: Use directional keys to teleport to new locations on the map (costs gold)
- Holo tile: Crouch by holding the down key, and press jump to descend (a good method to escape combat or ambush enemies)
- Return: Use the return function to teleport back to your main base (standing at the main base will restore your hyper's health)
Tip: If an enemy player tries to escape using a ladder, interact with the ladder by pressing the spacebar to shake them off.
Destroying Enemy Turrets in Hyper Universe
Teams must defeat a total of three turrets to win a match: the Outer Defense Turret, the Inner Defense Turret, and the Final Defense Turret.
A good strategy is to let your team's minions approach an enemy turret first, as the turret's defenses will prioritize them, giving you an opportunity to deal damage; however, if an enemy player is guarding a turret, do not engage alone. An enemy hyper can stun your character and inflict considerable damage.
Tip: Outer Defense Turrets become weakened after a certain amount of time once the match begins. Regain lost ground, or press the advantage during this phase.
Hyper Universe Ping Settings
Signalling your allies could spell the difference between victory and defeat, which makes pings all the more useful. Players can signal whether allies should group up (/Group Up) or retreat (/Retreat) depending on the circumstances of each engagement.
Consider using /Group Up to signal that an unguarded turret is being attacked, or /Retreat to warn a player of an impending ambush.
Hyper Universe Strategic Tips
Looking for a competitive edge? Hunt monsters within the vicinity of your Final Defense Turret to quickly gain experience -- and gold -- to unlock your ultimate and upgrade your equipment. The team that defeats more monsters will have a stronger advantage at the onset of the match; however, teams that focus on hunting monsters leave their turrets vulnerable to attack.
If things are quiet, they're probably too quiet. Consider searching for enemy teams that are engaged with map bosses, such as the dragon, to disrupt their strategy. When two or more players on the enemy team are defeated, rush their turrets while the revival time is in play.
If you've sustained considerable damage, guard a turret until reinforcements arrive. Do not leave a turret unguarded. When the area is secure, use your Return to Base function to restore your health.
After you've managed to win a few rounds, you will earn Cubes, which contain special items and crafting materials.
Use can dismantle items dropped from Cubes to acquire green, red, or blue bits, which you can then synthesize to create hypers, skins, equipment, equipment slots, emotes, and emblems.
Be sure to access Hyper Universe's Game Info section from the Game Lobby to discover backstories, dialog, skins, class overviews, and ability descriptions. Slap your opponents with Admiral W's fish sword as the Pirate Cook, or with Arslan's anchor as the Sea Tyrant.
Hyper Universe Level Up Rewards
Leveling up your account and hypers will unlock special rewards, including hypers, hyper coupons, Cubes, Game Points, and more! Gain enough story points to unlock even more rewards.

Gameplay
Nexon wedges into the saturated MOBA universe with two side-scrolling, mechanically identical arenas: the futuristic Delta Station and medieval fantasy Dragon Refuge. The uninspired approach to PvP combat, combined with recycled navigation tactics (e.g. ladders, teleports, springs, and dashes), dominates the look and feel of Hyper Universe, but fails to drown the extensive roster that offers a playing style (and aesthetic choice) for every gamer.
While no two characters feel the same, the cast, regardless of role, wields an arsenal of six unique abilities, including an ultimate, that can be activated by pressing A, Q, W, E, and R to fire off a series of devastating combos, or lack thereof, to forge through enemy defenses toward the Final Defense Turret. The key orientation can be a bit awkward, especially for those used to clicking or using W, A, S, and D to move; however, key binds can be edited in the user settings, and players can also opt to use a game controller.
Ability execution is seamless and complemented by a cooldown timer. The interface is predominantly free from obstruction, though upgrading equipment with gold collected from downing enemies seems to put an unreasonable onus on players to have a working knowledge of the various stat improvements. More competitive players can preset several equipment configurations, though they are restricted to one per match.
Unlike other MOBAs where teams may rely on brute strength, Hyper Universe encourages social strategy to complete objectives; lone players are primarily unable to charge lanes without a teammate’s support. It’s apparent some classes require nerfing, as unbalanced characters may experience gross respawn times that, when combined with a player detracting from the map’s main objective, all but guarantees defeat.
Connecting to the HyperNet does pose an issue. Players queuing for regular or AI matches are paired regardless of experience or level, with some wait times exceeding 30 minutes. Stepping away from the computer, even briefly, can cause some to miss the 10-second ready check, resulting in a requeue. The community is exceptionally small, so the odds of entering a match are entirely dependent on peak playing hours (unless you organize a custom match). With the absence of a central storyline, players are left with testing new kits in Training Mode, as doing so in regular PvP is ill-advised.
There are four servers — North America, South America, Europe, and Asia — that players will be asked to choose ad nauseam. Victims of recurring lag will have their character replaced with an AI when disconnecting from the server, which, for better or worse, will impact the match’s results, as well as your performance history.
The odds and ends: Hyper Universe’s achievement and crafting systems are forgettable. Playing characters and completing story-based objectives, such as adding them to your roster or winning a series of matches, unlocks text interactions that fail to bring the intensity of the game’s combat system. With no central playable thread to hold the lore together, interactions fail to hold any real significance. The incentive to completing story achievements is to stock up on in-game currency that can be used to buy new hypers and equipment.
Players can grind for crafting materials to make skins, equipment, equipment slots, emotes, and emblems, or skip the hassle altogether and purchase the desired items using cash directly. But with such long match queues, it begs the question: why spend the money on something I may not be able to use?
Hyper Universe unjustly maintains relevance on the back of its roster, which overall lacks a genuine diversity. The character models, packed with a trove of inspired skins, are not indicative of their intended meta, or are otherwise wholly clichéd; however, where the hypers lack refinement, the game makes up for in polished combat arenas. Transitions are smooth, abilities are executed clearly and believably, and enemy bosses, such as the Dragon, are particular standouts.
The soundtrack is limited but maintains the upbeat, battle-inspired, futuristic tone Hyper Universe sets out to achieve. Sound effects mirror their animations in degree and quality.
Replay Value
Nexon’s foray into the MOBA genre with Hyper Universe is far from revolutionary. The gameplay is enjoyable, but it lacks the stamina to hold up against its competitors. While the mechanics, arenas, and soundtrack may devolve into a passive, albeit comfortable, numbness, players will return to wreak havoc each week with their favorite hyper. The game’s strongest selling point is that it remains free to play. Implementing any subscription service will surely erase whatever remaining players populate its servers. Only new maps, a compelling storyline, and iconic heroes will allow Hyper Universe to realize its fullest potential.
