Before the season began April’s Chinese Grand Prix was cancelled due the beginnings of what turned into a global pandemic. The teams headed to Melbourne for the opening race of the year, but the Australian Grand Prix was cancelled on the day practice was due to begin.

The following week the races in Bahrain and Vietnam were cancelled as well, and within a few days the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix had joined them. Monaco subsequently announced its race would not be held at a later date. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix later announced its original race date would not go ahead.

Formula 1 is seeking to reinstate other races later in the season, but no postponements have been confirmed yet.

Races expected on next year’s calendar

The 22 events originally scheduled for the 2020 F1 season included the new Vietnam Grand Prix, to be held at a street circuit in Hanoi during April, and the Dutch Grand Prix, returning to the schedule following a 35-year absence.

Significant changes on the calendar

As a result of Hanoi and Zandvoort’s new contracts, the original schedule was due feature 22 races, which would the most ever held in a single season.

But while new rounds have been added in Vietnam and the Netherlands, Germany has lost its round of the world championship.

More F1 calendars

Compared to previous seasons F1 calendars have generally got longer over time. Earlier seasons featured as few as seven races, however since 2004 a minimum of 17 has been the norm.

The 2021 F1 calendar has not been officially confirmed yet. However based on details announced previously we already know of at least 17 races which are expected to take place in the 73rd running of the world championship.

Testing dates

The 2021 F1 testing calendar has not been announced yet. In 2020 teams scheduled two three-day tests in the weeks prior to the first race of the season and subsequent two-day tests after selected races later in the season.

Will the number of races increase in 2021?

At least one new venue could join the F1 calendar in 2021. The championship revealed in October 2019 it had an ‘agreement in principle’ to hold a race on a new circuit at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. If this race goes ahead it will take place in May.

Therefore the 2021 calendar could have more races than the preceding schedule. However at present some races on the 2020 roster do not have contracts for the following season.

2020 season races not yet confirmed on the next F1 calendar

There are five races on the 2020 F1 calendar which are not currently contracted to take place in 2021. These are:

  • Chinese Grand Prix (Shanghai)
  • Spanish Grand Prix (Circuit de Catalunya)
  • Monaco Grand Prix (Monte-Carlo)
  • Austrian Grand Prix (Red Bull Ring)
  • Brazilian Grand Prix (Interlagos)
